Court Sub-Base & Pavement Engineering Standards

Building a durable sports surface requires proper geotechnical sub-base design. American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) guidelines mandate:

  • Post-Tensioned Concrete (Recommended): 100mm to 125mm (4″ to 5″) slab thickness with 3,000 PSI compressive strength. Post-tensioned cables prevent shrinkage cracks from telegraphing through the acrylic surface.
  • Asphalt Pavements: 38mm (1.5″) hot-mix asphalt surface course over a 100mm–150mm crushed stone aggregate base compacted to 95% standard Proctor density.
  • Planar Drainage Slope: All outdoor hard courts must feature a continuous 0.83% to 1.0% (1:120 to 1:100) side-to-side slope. Center crowns or two-way valleys are strictly prohibited.

Multi-Sport Court Conversion & Color Contrast Standards

When painting multiple sports onto a single concrete pad (e.g., dual Tennis and Pickleball overlays):

  • Primary Sport: Painted in high-contrast white 2-inch (5cm) lines.
  • Secondary Overlay: Painted in a distinct, muted color (light blue, yellow, or grey) with 1.5-inch or 2-inch line width to avoid visual confusion for players and tournament referees.
  • Tennis-to-Pickleball Conversion: A single standard 120′ × 60′ tennis court envelope fits up to four regulation 44′ × 20′ pickleball courts (two on each side of the net) with full 5-foot sideline safety buffers.

Solar Orientation Rules for Outdoor Sports Grounds

Civil sports engineering codes mandate specific compass orientations to prevent players from looking into direct morning or late-afternoon sun glare:

  • Racket & Net Courts (Tennis, Pickleball, Volleyball): Must be aligned North-South (345° to 15° Azimuth). Never align East-West, or one player will serve directly into blinding sunset glare.
  • Pitch Sports (Soccer, Rugby, Football): Recommended orientation is NNW to SSE (340° to 355°).
  • Athletics 400m Tracks: The main home straightaway is positioned on the West side facing East so spectators in the grandstand have the sun behind them during afternoon meets.
