How to Mark a 400m Running Track on Grass (Field Guide)
Marking a regulation 400m track on an empty grass sports field or dirt plot does not require an optical total station. Here is the field-tested 5-stake Pythagoras method used by groundskeepers and school athletic directors to establish true 90° corners and circular bends with standard measuring tapes.
To mark a regulation 400m track on grass, stake out an 84.39-meter straightaway, triangulate a perpendicular corner using the 111.58-meter diagonal check (across an 84.39m × 73.00m core rectangle), drive center pins C1 and C2 at 36.50m from the corners, and sweep both 180° bends using a non-stretch 36.50m steel wire trammel.
Field Plot Requirements by Lane Count (1.22m Lanes)
Before driving stakes, verify that your field accommodates the track envelope plus a mandatory 3.00m to 5.00m safety clearance from boundary fences, goalposts, and sprinkler vaults:
| Configuration | Minimum Length | Minimum Width | Minimum Land Area | Outer Trammel Radius | Aerosol Paint Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Lanes | 167.15 m (548′) | 82.76 m (271′) | 13,833 m² (3.42 acres) | 41.38 m | 22 cans |
| 6 Lanes | 172.03 m (564′) | 87.64 m (287′) | 15,077 m² (3.73 acres) | 43.82 m | 32 cans |
| 8 Lanes (Standard) | 176.91 m (580′) | 92.52 m (303′) | 16,368 m² (4.04 acres) | 46.26 m | 43 cans |

400M TRACK GROUND MARKING — FIELD CREW JOB SHEET
Standard: World Athletics TR 17.3 | Plot Size: 187m × 103m | Date: __________________
| Survey Parameter | Exact Setting Measurement | Physical Field Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Home Straight (Stake 4 to 3) | 84.39 m | Establish baseline 5m from fence. Stake 3 is the Finish Line. |
| Track Core Width (Stake 4 to 1) | 73.00 m | Pull 73.00m perpendicular to establish opposite straightaway. |
| Full Diagonal (Corner 3 to 1) | 111.58 m | Cross-check diagonal between Stake 3 and 1 to guarantee 90.00° squareness. |
| Curve Radius (C1 & C2 to Kerb) | 36.50 m (CDR) | Sweep 180° arc using steel wire anchored at C1 (Turn 2) and C2 (Turn 1). |
| Lane Width Intervals | 1.22 m (48 in) | Extend radius wire by 1.22m for each consecutive lane (L2: 37.72m, L8: 45.04m). |

Groundskeeper Field Rules for Grass Tracks
- Mowing Height: Cut turf to 25mm to 30mm (1.0″ to 1.2″) 24 hours prior to marking. Spraying tall grass causes lines to shift as blades bend.
- Paint Consumption: One standard 18 oz aerosol can of turf marking paint covers approximately 75 meters of 5cm line. An 8-lane track requires ~43 cans for a complete initial coat.
- Avoid Nylon String: Always use vinyl-coated aircraft cable or steel wire for scribing curves. Nylon line stretches up to 1.5m under tension and produces egg-shaped turns.
